Many people experience nightmares – dreams filled with fear or threat that leaves the dreamer in distress. They feel anxious when sleeping, and it results in a disruption of awakening life. These nightmares can happen naturally, and there are certain causes of these frightening experiences.

What is a Nightmare?

What is a Lucid Dream?

When people are in a state of dreaming but are also aware that it's a dream and not reality and can control it to some extent, they are experiencing lucid dreaming. Dreamers can change events, characters, emotions, and scenes if they wish to do so.

Lucid dreams can happen naturally, and you can also use specific techniques to learn the craft. Lucid dreams usually occur during the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) stage of sleep. People usually have 5-6 dreams every night. A similar number of lucid dreams can also be achieved, although you may wake up inbetween.

What is the Procedure to Treat Nightmares through Lucid Dreams?

Several treatments for nightmares are available to proceed with, based on their reasons. An important and now research-proven method to treat nightmares is lucid dreaming. Patients can be trained to avoid nightmares through certain steps.

1. Patients should learn about dreams, nightmares, and lucid dreams.

2. They should maintain a daily dream log of their dreams to understand the patterns of nightmares.

3. They should focus on the lucid dream before sleeping and practice MILD (Mnemonic Induced Lucid Dream), where you repeat a certain verse before sleeping.

4. Reality checks are another great way to experience lucid dreams.

5. The patient requires to have a determined intention to achieve lucid dreaming.

6. They should give regular care to all dream experiences, be it nightmares or lucid dreams.

Dreamers become conscious of the nightmare and realize that it is just a dream and there is no real danger; hence they can control it. They can change the characters, emotions, and scenes to get out of the nightmare. Therefore, a nightmare becomes a lucid dream, and the dreamer comes out of the threat situation.

How effective is the Lucid Dreaming treatment for a nightmare?

Several studies are in progress, and some have concluded that lucid dreaming is an effective method to treat nightmares. Research has shown that learning about lucid dreaming alone can lower the intensity and frequency of nightmares.
