There was a time when the concept of induced lucid dreaming and even lucid dreaming was unfamiliar and rarely discussed. Over the recent years, increased awareness of lucid dreaming and ways to induce it is noticeable, along with advanced research and surveys.

Conscious dreaming techniques are the primary activities that are performed during awaken life as well as dream life. More scientific research is required about lucid dreams, induced lucid dreaming, and techniques to induce a lucid dream. For now, here are some potential techniques that you can try at home to experience a lucid dream.

Set your Bedroom Environment

It would be best if you made your bedroom hospitable to dreaming as much as possible by keeping it dark, cool, quiet, and organized. You can use a blackout curtain or an eye mask to blackout light. Also, use earplugs or a noise machine to block noise. Set the room temperature to a cool mid 16 C.

Improve Sleep Hygiene

Lucid dreams usually occur during the REM stage of sleep, so you should get more REM sleep. It is possible by increasing the quality of sleep and by following good sleep hygiene. Before going to bed, you do some relaxing activities like:

  • Don't take heavy meals and caffeinated drinks.
  • Take a warm bath.
  • Unplug all electronic devices at least an hour before bed.
  • Meditate and calm yourself.

Reality Check

A reality check is an essential technique to induce lucid dreaming. It helps you to differentiate between a lucid dream and real life. You can push your index finger of one hand into the palm of the other hand, and if it goes across, that means you are in a lucid dream. You can also practice different reality checks, like counting your fingers, looking at the clock, adding two numbers, etc.

Mnemonic Induction Lucid Dreaming

Mnemonics are short phrases that you can keep repeating before you fall asleep. For example, "Today, I will have a lucid dream." By repeating it, you are giving a message to your subconscious brain that you will be aware of it when you dream.

This technique involves getting up from the REM stage of sleep after 4.5 to 6 hours of sleep by an alarm. Keep awake for 10 to 30 minutes; you can write your dream, get up from your bed, or do something else. Get back to bed and focus on your dream and try to fall asleep again.

Maintain a dream diary

Keep a dream diary and a pen near your bed to record your dreams and review them later to understand the patterns. Whenever you wake up, don't move; focus on something like the knob of the door or a picture and recall details of your dream. Once you are done with it, get up and write your dream in your diary or record it on your phone as a voice note.

Play Video Games

Famous lucid dreamers state that gaming helps them in lucid dreaming. A video game is a fictional world, and the gamer has to control movements and some aspects of the game theme, just like in a lucid dream. But stop playing the game at least an hour before your bedtime.
